11/15 class

We started out class on Tuesday, like we always do with social media news and focused on the memes that have been circulating around about Joe Biden and Barack Obama.  These memes are mainly about Joe Biden saying funny things about Donald Trump.  These memes have been getting a lot of attention because of the election and since Barack Obama and Joe Biden have their last few months in the White House.  All of these memes indicate that they have a sort of bromance that is funny to viewers because Joe Biden has mostly flown under the radar and now people are realizing that they are both going to be leaving soon.

We then talked about Publics and Counterpublics.  A public is a group that is made up of people that do not know each other but have a common interest.  A Counterpublic according to our lecture notes "is usually a smaller group of people who share something misunderstood by the larger public and who join because of that".  The example that was used was about how Muslim women are treated and seen through the United States society.  These Muslim women interact with the outside public through their own small public.  Learning about Publics and Counterpublics has opened my eyes to the fact that I knew what a public was and I learned what a Counterpublic was and how it runs.  The reason that they are in effect and what they do.
